Röhm and OQ Chemicals lay the foundation for a new plant

With the groundbreaking, Röhm and OQ Chemicals have officially started building a new large-scale methyl methacrylate (MMA) plant. The new plant will be built by Röhm at the OQ Chemicals production site in Bay City, Texas, USA.

OQ Chemicals will supply the new facility with raw materials and provide infrastructure and site services. To this end, OQ Chemicals has invested significantly in additional propionaldehyde capacity and local infrastructure. Röhm, a leading MMA manufacturer and portfolio company of Advent International, will use its latest proprietary production technology LiMA (“Leading in Methacrylates”).

Upon completion in early 2024, the new facility is expected to produce 250.000 tons of MMA annually and create at least 70 new jobs.

“With our 'Propel' project – the name stands for 'Propyls Elevated' – we are expanding our application portfolio and at the same time supporting Röhm's new MMA plant with important raw materials and site-related services. Our North American business is strong, sustainable and successful, and Bay City is a core location for OQ Chemicals. Our investment in additional propionaldehyde capacity and infrastructure underscores the importance and trust we place in the Bay City site and its employees,” said Dr. Oliver Borgmeier, CEO of OQ Chemicals.
